“And So It Begins,” documentary on 2022 presidential campaign of former vice president Leni Robredo, has found its venue screenings for its wider release after its debut at recently concluded Cinemalaya International Film Festival.
Former vice president announced on her verified Facebook page venue partners where block screenings of “And So It Begins” will be held.
“Nakapag-reminisce na ba ang lahat?” wrote the former vice president.
Post lists down venues of screening: Cinema 76, Fisher Mall in Malabon, Fisher Mall in Quezon City, Gateway Cineplex in Cubao, Powerplant Makati, Shang Red Carpet in Mandaluyong, Sta. Lucia, SunStar Mall Laguna, Gaisano in Davao, NCCC in Davao and Screenville Alturas in Bohol.
Robredo asked public to watch out for volunteer groups who will hold block screenings of “And So It Begins” in their areas.
“And So It Begins” revolves around grassroot movement of Robredo’s 2022 presidential campaign and aftermath of most recent national elections.
“Amid traditional pomp and circumstance of Filipino elections, quirky people’s movement rises to defend nation against deepening threats to truth and democracy,” documentary’s synopsis reads. “In collective act of joy as form of resistance, hope flickers against backdrop of increasing autocracy.”
It is directed by Ramona Diaz, who also directed award-winning documentary “A Thousand Cuts,” documentary film about journalist Maria Ressa.

Comelec junked COC filing halt
By J.Lo
“Our commitment is to resolve cases of nuisance candidates on or before Nov. 30,” Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman George Garcia has rejected calls to defer filing of certificates of candidacy (COC) for May 2025 midterm elections.
Postponing COC filing period could adversely affect preparations for next year’s polls, Garcia said.
He said Comelec is also preparing for first Bangsamoro parliamentary election in 2025.
Delays in filing COCs could affect ballot printing and resolution of pending pre-election cases, he stressed.
Garcia said Oct. 1 to 8 COC filing period will remain.
Guidelines prohibiting withdrawal of candidacy after Oct. 8 deadline will come out soon, he said.
Comelec wants to resolve cases of disqualification and cancellation of COCs and remove nuisance candidates to start early printing of 70 million ballots, Garcia said.
Congress should let Comelec proceed with its scheduled COC filing period, Garcia said.

Guo’s change of heart withheld her back home — PNP
By J.Lo
WHOEVER aided former Bamban Mayor Alice Guo’s exit out of Philippines will be held accountable. National Bureau of Investigation director Jaime Santiago vowed to hold accountable individuals, particularly if they are from government, who helped Guo evade arrest order from Senate.
Guo was supposed to return to the country last week but she apparently had change of heart, according to Philippine National Police-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group director Maj. Gen. Leo Francisco .
Francisco received information Guo was supposed to return to the Philippines from Singapore last August 14.
He said agents were deployed at Ninoy Aquino International Airport to intercept Guo.
However, former local chief executive did not arrive. It is unclear why Guo, who was supposedly with five other people, did not continue with her travel.
Meanwhile, National Bureau of Investigation director Jaime Santiago said they have started probe to unmask people who assisted Guo.

‘Dear Satan’ movie to change title after backlash
By Cynthia Montojo
“We want to extend our deepest apologies if title of our movie has caused any offense or discomfort…it was never our intention to hurt or disrespect anyone’s religious beliefs…our aim has always been to create content that entertains while conveying meaningful messages,” Producer Mavx Productions said in its open letter Christmas-themed movie initially titled “Dear Satan,” starring Paolo Contis and child star Sienna Stevens, will be changed to different title to “better reflect its intended message.”
Mavx Productions on Thursday posted its open letter on Facebook addressing several concerns raised by viewers regarding their upcoming film, set for release next month.
Mavx Productions said “Dear Satan” was produced to explore concept of “good vs. evil.”
Movie stars Paolo as Satan who accidentally receives letter from child that was supposed to be for Santa Claus.
As shown in its trailer, Paolo gets in touch with child named Chichi (Sienna), whom he tries to corrupt in any way possible. Surprisingly for him, he finds hard time corrupting innocent child’s mind even though he has subjected her to temptations, such as hoarding food or showing half-naked photos of men.
Instead of Chichi being influenced by ways of the world, she seemingly touched heart of Satan as he shows he cares for her when he entered church carrying her impassive body when she met accident.
Film is narrative about power of faith and triumph of good over evil…we wanted to illustrate that, despite presence of evil in the world, faith and virtue can prevail.
“We understand and respect concerns raised by our audience…in response, we have decided to change title of the movie to better reflect its intended message and to honor sensitivities of all our viewers…we believe this change will help align film more closely with its moral core and ensure it resonates positively with our audience,” production outfit added.
It also called on viewers to watch their film with “open mind and heart,” hoping viewers will be able to understand what they were trying to tell in the movie.
As of press time, production outfit has yet to reveal movie’s new title. It is scheduled for release on September 18.

No politics in AQ arrest order
By Nidz Godino
“It’s easy to say politically motivated but that is not true,” Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin told reporters on sidelines of commemoration of National Heroes Day in Taguig City.called on camp of Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC) founder Apollo Quiboloy to respect justice system even as he denied arrest order for the religious leader was politically motivated.
Bersamin made remarks days after thousands of police led by Brig. Gen. Nicolas Torre III, Police Regional Office 11 chief, raided KOJC compound in Davao City in search of Quiboloy, who is accused of sexual abuse and human trafficking.
“Law must take its course… he is answerable to law…law must take its course…there is process there,” former chief justice said.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.was also present at National Heroes Day event but did not give media interview.
Interior Secretary Benhur Abalos called on Quiboloy to surrender as members of Philippine National Police (PNP) continue to search for him at KOJC compound.
“I reiterate my appeal to Apollo Quiboloy and his co-accused to surrender and face charges of child abuse, sexual abuse and human trafficking… surrender of Quiboloy is the only means for him to prove he still respects law,” Abalos said.
Senate President Francis Escudero also called on Quiboloy to surrender to avoid worsening situation “where there may be more needless loss of lives as well as increasing disrespect for rule of law and our law enforcers.” Sen. Ronald dela Rosa made same call, saying Quiboloy should face charges because he “cannot hide forever.”
Sen. Risa Hontiveros said commotion at KOJC compound “would not have reached this kind of chaos if Quiboloy had appeared in Senate or in court since beginning.”huge number of KOJC members reportedly blocked national highway at Buhangin in Davao City, where group’s compound is located, on Sunday evening, forcing several passengers to walk to Davao City International Airport as some vehicles could not pass due to protest. Quiboloy’s camp accused police officers of irregularities in enforcing arrest warrant, as well as forced entry and using tear gas.
Dela Rosa, former PNP chief, Hontiveros and Abalos appealed for calm and to allow police to do their job.
Abalos defended PNP, saying police were implementing their duty to serve warrant of arrest on Aug. 24.
“Based on different intelligence reports, Apollo Quiboloy is still inside 30-hectare compound covers land, buildings, secret rooms and passage that needs continuous search, we promise to maintain peace and order in the community… I appeal to public to remain calm and allow legal process to prevail,” Abalos said.
Senior Deputy Speaker Aurelio Gonzales Jr. and Deputy Majority Leader Jude Acidre defended PNP operation, saying it is legitimate action.
“Former president Rodrigo Duterte, as former chief executive, you understand better than anyone importance of law enforcement in upholding justice…our police officers were enforcing legitimate court order, and they should be allowed to do their job without undue interference,” Gonzales said.
Acidre emphasized no one is above the law, regardless of position or influence.
“Quiboloy is fugitive facing serious charges, and PNP was simply fulfilling its duty to enforce the law….imperative that we allow our law enforcement agencies to operate without political interference,” Acidre said.
He cautioned Duterte that his “defense of Quiboloy only serves to cloud issue.”
“Law must apply to everyone equally, and any attempt to shield someone from justice sets dangerous example,” Acidre added.
Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla wants airtight cases against perpetrators of alleged human trafficking at KOJC after rescue of two victims.
Remulla called for “stronger collaboration” among Department of Justice through Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking, PNP and Department of Social Welfare and Development.
“This is to ensure airtight cases against perpetrators with end view of delivering justice to their victims…let us continue fighting this human trafficking menace, hounds society, particularly vulnerable sector,” Remulla said.
PNP earlier rescued man and woman who claimed they were being barred from leaving compound in Davao City.
Remulla also urged members and non-members of the KOJC who have experienced abuse to come forward and file charges, assuring them of government assistance and protection.
He praised PNP for their efforts in rescuing alleged victims of trafficking..
Meanwhile, Bersamin refused to comment on Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio’s statement over the weekend asking forgiveness from KOJC members for urging them to vote for Marcos in the 2022 elections.“I have no comment on that,” Bersamin said. The Vice President called raid betrayal of public trust and violation of constitutionally protected rights.
But House Deputy Majority Leader and Iloilo Rep. Janette Garin expressed deep concern over Duterte’s pronouncements, saying these “appeared to defend powerful figure accused of heinous crimes, rather than seeking justice for victims.”
“As mother, woman and public servant, I cannot remain silent in the face of Vice President Sara Duterte’s recent statement concerning KOJC and ongoing legal actions against its leaders,” Garin said.
Duterte, who severed ties with Marcos administration but remains close friends with President’s sister, Sen. Imee Marcos, was curious if police’s “excessive force” against Quiboloy and his flock was due to their being Duterte supporters.
Her brother, Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte, asked how long would police stay at KOJC compound to enforce warrant.
“This situation has already caused inconvenience to motorists, businesses and the public… public seeks clarification from the PNP, how long do you intend to stay at the KOJC property?” mayor’s statement read.
Younger Duterte respects implementation of arrest warrant “as long as it is in accordance with law.”
“We have very positive information that Quiboloy and his associates are inside KOJC compound,” Maj. Catherine dela Rey, Davao Police Regional Office 11 spokesperson said Apollo Quiboloy, leader of Kingdom of Jesus Christ, is likely hiding in underground bunker up to 30 meters deep within KOJC compound in Davao City.
Dela Rey said multiple signs of life have been detected underground using life detector equipment.
She said Philippine National Police detectors confirmed there are people underground in the compound and PNP is now focused on locating entrance to bunker.
Despite use of ground-penetrating radar, identified signs of life 20 to 30 meters below ground, KOJC members have been uncooperative, according to Dela Rey.
“They have been obstructing our efforts, and structures they are protecting suggest they are hiding something significant,” Dela Rey noted.
Ferdinand Topacio, one of Quiboloy’s lawyers, has no communication with his client.
He stressed he has no information if Quiboloy is still in the country, adding, “I cannot speak without knowing all information.”
Col. Jean Fajardo, PNP public information officer, confirmed search operation is concentrated in specific area within 30-hectare KOJC compound where radar detected signs of life underground.
“We believe we are close to finding secret entrance to bunker,” she said, emphasizing PNP is facing significant resistance from KOJC members in these target areas.
Fajardo noted PNP has received intelligence confirming Quiboloy’s presence within compound, driven intensified search efforts.
“Resistance we are encountering is strongest in areas we believe could be hiding Quiboloy, which further reinforces our belief that he is there,” she said.
Fajardo said despite challenges, PNP remains confident in its mission.
“We are in high spirits and confident that we will soon locate secret entrance and bring this operation to successful conclusion,” Fajardo stressed, while refraining from disclosing specific details about ongoing search.
Asked if Duterte family should interfere, Dela Rey said police would engage in dialogue to seek their assistance in convincing Quiboloy to surrender peacefully.
“We hope they understand that we are just doing our job, following court’s orders to apprehend Quiboloy due to warrants issued against him,” she said.
PNP chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil called on “political backers and influential supporters” of Quiboloy to “uphold rule of law” by encouraging him to face charges filed against him.
Marbil emphasized importance of adhering to legal processes and reminded Quiboloy’s supporters rule of law is fundamental principle that must be respected by all, regardless of status or influence.
“I respectfully urge you to exemplify true leadership by advising Quiboloy to adhere to rule of law and to address accusations against him through proper legal channels,” Marbil stated.
Tensions between Quiboloy’s group and police escalated on Sunday evening, resulting in injuries to at least seven police officers and arrest of three KOJC members during rally outside group’s compound in Davao City.
According to report from PNP public information office, officers sustained head injuries, nose bridge bleeding, bruises and left knee injury.
Six of the officers were transported to Camp Quintin M. Merecido Hospital for treatment, while one received treatment at the scene.
Rally, supposedly prayer and candle-lighting event, turned violent when KOJC members and other persons allegedly blocked national highway with vehicles, including wing van, cranes and fire truck, obstructing both sides of the road near KOJC compound.
This also affected access to Davao International Airport, although airport’s entrance remained open, according to Dela Rey.
“Rallyists violated permit issued by Davao City government, allowed them to conduct event inside KOJC compound…instead, they held rally on highway and burned tires, turning situation aggressive and violent,” Dela Rey said.
PNP arrested three persons during rally charged with obstruction of justice and direct assault.
Other possible charges, according to Fajardo, are being considered with PNP “lawyers studying possible charges, including human trafficking, illegal detention and assault on police officers.”
Dela Rey noted that police employed maximum tolerance throughout event but warned dispersal could occur if blockade was not removed.
Despite ongoing negotiations, around 200 rallyists remained in front of KOJC compound, with additional police forces being deployed to manage situation.
“We’ve requested augmentation of 300 officers to support 2,000 police personnel already on the ground,” Dela Rey said.
Regional police offices in Soccskargen, Northern Mindanao, Zamboanga peninsula and Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao have expressed their solidarity with their Davao counterparts.
Fajardo denied allegations that police initiated violence.
“PNP did not start commotion…we have maintained maximum tolerance, despite our officers being attacked with fire extinguishers and other objects,” Fajardo said during news briefing at Camp Crame. She added PNP is investigating reports KOJC members may have inflicted injuries on themselves to blame police.
“We have video evidence showing that KOJC members were hurting each other to create false accusations against police…we are currently authenticating this footage,” Fajardo added.
She urged Quiboloy and his supporters to allow police to carry out their duties peacefully.
“This is not fight against KOJC….these are valid warrants of arrest against specific individuals…we appeal to KOJC to cooperate and allow us to complete our legal responsibilities,” Fajardo said.
Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte asked how long it would take for PNP to search compound, even as he urged KOJC members to protest peacefully.
Antonio Pido, national president of Integrated Bar of the Philippines said duration of such searches is relative, depending on size and structure of the area to be searched.
Duterte lamented “excessive force against innocent civilians” and “unauthorized occupation” of KOJC compound.
“As much as I want to intervene, police personnel will only listen to PNP chief and their Commander-in-Chief President Bongbong Marcos,” Duterte said in statement.
His brother, Davao City Rep. Paolo Duterte, sent food packs and water to KOJC rallyists.
Both Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific advised their passengers traveling through Davao International Airport of possible flight changes.
“Cebu Pacific is aware of ongoing demonstrations in Davao City affect access to Francisco Bangoy International Airport,” its advisory said.
Passengers were advised to “allow extra time for their journey to airport as they may experience longer travel time.”
Philippine Airlines is offering their passengers options to convert their ticket to travel credits or to rebook, refund or reroute these to another flight within 60 days from original flight.
Cebu Pacific is offering free rebooking and travel funds to passengers who wish to postpone their flights from Davao.

Davao flood projects unfunded
By Nidz Godino
“Vice president, like every Filipino, has right to point out problems confronting our countrymen…unlike ordinary citizens, however, she can actually suggest or do something tangible about them using her position, resources and platform,” Senate President Chiz Escudero said Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio on Friday doubled down on her criticism of Marcos administration’s lack of flood control masterplan, this time claiming that national government may be refusing to fund flood control projects in Davao City because “mayor is Duterte.”
In another open letter-type statement posted on Duterte’s personal page and shared by Office of the Vice President, Duterte is using her “position, resources and platform” to “show our government officials how to command.”
This comes after Escudero told reporters on Friday that Duterte’s comments about Marcos administration’s lack of master plan for flood infrastructure are “perplexing” given that her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, had “six years to develop one, but was unable to do so.”
Escudero said flooding has been long-time problem that could have already been solved by previous government.
Without naming Escudero, the vice president recalled that during her term as Davao City mayor, she ordered city’s engineer office and Department of Public Works and Highways to study flood problem of the city.
This, according to Duterte, led to her father’s creation of flood control master plan.
“Kaya nga mayroon nagawa ang PRRD administration sa flood planning…nagsimula noong Setyembre 2016 at na-publish noong Hulyo 2023 ang Master Plan and Feasibility Study for Flood Control, baka naman gusto nang pondohan ang mga infrastructure projects na naaayon sa masterplan…o baka naman may alinlangan pa hinggil dito dahil Duterte ang mayor at mas mamarapatin nilang gibain na lang?” Duterte said, referring to her brother, Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte.
Philippine Center of Investigative Journalism (PCIJ) report in 2018 found that DPWH under former President Rodrigo Duterte went on an “infrastructure frenzy” trumped that of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
According to then-DPWH Secretary Mark Villar, in just 24 months or from July 2016 to July 2018, DPWH under Duterte awarded 1,833 projects monthly, or 60 projects daily. Projects included flood-control systems, roads, bridges, schools, water systems, irrigation, power systems and other civil-works projects.
In a 2013 report, Commission on Audit flagged Davao City for using up just 11% of its P175 million funds for flood control and disaster preparedness projects under Disbursement Acceleration Program, or DAP. City mayor during first half of the year was Sara Duterte before her father replaced her.
DAP, enabled use of unprogrammed funds and seen as replacement to discretionary pork barrel funds of lawmakers, was ruled unconstitutional by Supreme Court
