FMJ urges Pinoys liberate Philippines from shackles of society’s ills

By Nidz Godino

“Gat Andres may have been long gone, but his fight carries on,let us honor his memory by finding  deeper meaning in his sacrifice and doing our part in liberating our country from  shackles of hunger, corruption, criminality and other ills of society,” President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.  called on Filipinos to emulate  courage and selflessness of national hero Andres Bonifacio as they strive to help end  problems plaguing the country.

In his message for  commemoration of  161st birth anniversary of Bonifacio, Marcossaid  leader of  Philippine Revolution continues to inspire Filipinos to strive for greatness in their shared task of nation-building.

Marcos  noted that Bonifacio, Supremo of the Katipunan, organized and inspired his fellow Filipinos to rise against tyranny and break  chains of oppression. His humble beginnings did not deter him from realizing his dreams and goals for the country, with his courage, he lit the flames of the Philippine Revolution, which finally united our land and emboldened many to lay down their lives willingly for the cause of our motherland against the colonizers, the President stressed.

He urged Filipinos to remember  legacy of sacrifice of Bonifacio and other heroes who resisted colonial rule.

“We owe them  debt of gratitude for awakening our national consciousness, upholding our sense of identity and rousing our spirit of self-determination, with patriotism, discipline and love for one another as our guide, let us build a better Bagong Pilipinas where every Filipino lives in genuine peace, progress and harmony,” the Chief Executive said.

Born on Nov. 30, 1863 in Tondo, Manila, Bonifacio was one of the founders of  Kataastaasan, Kagalanggalangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan or KKK,  fought for independence from Spanish rule. He was executed by fellow revolutionaries who accused him of sedition in 1897.

As workers marked Bonifacio Day with protests calling for wage hikes and lower prices for commodities, Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio stressed  importance of his example in taking action against what ails  country.

“Remembering  bravery of Andres Bonifacio is  opportunity for us to reflect on our situation and our future as a free country,  important that our celebration of greatness of Andres Bonifacio opens our awareness to  condition of our country such as poverty, hunger, unemployment and lack of basic services for so many Filipinos,” Duterte said in  statement.

The Vice President said ensuring Bonifacio’s vision lives on amid trying times would inspire Filipinos to strive to be loyal and “true” citizens of the country.

“Let’s spread  message of his heroism to each other and hopefully it will become  fire to burn so that we can be stronger, braver and stand up. Bonifacio’s legacy is our freedom…let’s take care of it…let’s fight for it,” she added.

Speaker Martin Romualdez, meanwhile, urged government officials to emulate Bonifacio’s legacy of “integrity.”

“Today, as we honor  courage and sacrifices of Gat Andres Bonifacio,  Father of  Philippine Revolution, we are reminded of  vital role of integrity, unity and accountability in nation-building,” Romualdez said in his message.

Romualdez noted that Bonifacio stood against tyranny and division, championing  ideals of freedom and justice.

“In these challenging times, when  principles of democracy and good governance are put to the test, let us draw inspiration from Bonifacio’s bravery and steadfast commitment to the truth,” Romualdez said.

The Speaker said  Bonifacio’s life should remind Filipinos  genuine leadership demands not just strength, but respect for others as well and  deep sense of responsibility to uphold  greater good.

“The path toward progress is never without challenges, but like Bonifacio, we must face them with unwavering resolve and  firm belief in  collective power of  Filipino people, let us reject fear, division, and discord, and instead work together in the spirit of bayanihan to build a nation grounded on peace, justice and prosperity for all,” he said.

He also urged Filipinos to honor Bonifacio’s memory by “safeguarding  democracy and freedom he fought so valiantly to achieve.”

“As we commemorate Bonifacio’s legacy, may his patriotism inspire us to remain vigilant, principled and united as we navigate these turbulent times,” he said.

Romualdez said Bonifacio’s bravery led  Filipino people of his generation in fighting oppression, showing his unwavering commitment to “freedom, justice and the welfare of the Filipino people.”

“Bonifacio stood against tyranny and division, championing ideals of freedom, justice and  welfare of  Filipino people above all else,” he said.

The Speaker also reflected on  enduring relevance of Bonifacio’s principles, saying his example calls for leadership rooted in truth and responsibility even in today’s challenging times.

“His life reminds us that genuine leadership demands not just strength, but also respect for others and  deep sense of responsibility to uphold  greater good,” he said.

Like Bonifacio, every Filipino should face challenges with unwavering resolve and with belief in the country’s potential to move forward and progress.

Don’t be deceived, stay focused-FMJ

By Nidz Godino

Inline image

“Huwag kayong nalilinlang sa mga nangyayari …let’s stay focused,” President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in his message to officers and troops of  Southern Luzon Command (SOLCOM) at Camp Guillermo Nakar in Lucena City, Quezon amid  worsening rift with  Dutertes reminded  military  to remain true to its mission of protecting  Filipino people and not be distracted by  current political noise.

This was his apparent response to former president Rodrigo Duterte’s calling on military to correct Marcos’ “fractured governance.”

“For me, when there’s  lot of noise around, I always think what my job really is…is it my job to pick  fight, or is it to debate on nonsensical matters…no, my work is to make  Philippines better…in your case, you also have your mission…so, don’t ,if you are confused, just think, remember… what is my mission…your mission is to defend  people and the Republic , people of the Republic of the Philippines and the state of the Republic of the Philippines ,let’s keep that mission clear in our mind”, Marcos said.

The President directed troops to use their resources for  “territorial security aspect of  new mission.”

“Keep up the good work…and we will get to that point where we can say that we can already transition fully, or at least  majority of our resources can transition already to defense of our territory,” Marcos said.

During his visit, Marcos awarded medals to five soldiers namely, Army 1Lt. Billy Canacan (Gold Cross), 2Lt. Green Marc Augusto (Gold Cross), Maj. Bryann Oria (Silver Cross), 1Lt. Merjoerie Ballesteros (Silver Cross) and Air Force T/Sgt. Noli Lomeda (Bronze Cross).

With the President were Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro and Armed Forces of the Philippines chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr.

AFP earlier said there is no need for  loyalty check within its ranks.

“What we are emphasizing here is AFP is  non-partisan organization…as our chief of staff has already stated, our Armed Forces is united and professional,” according to AFP spokesperson Col. Francel Margareth Padilla.

“Our loyalty is to the flag and to the Constitution and we adhere to the chain of command,” she said.

In  late-night online press conference, the former president sought  military and police’s intervention to “protect the Constitution” amid what he described as “fractured” government. Duterte, however, stopped short of calling for  coup.

The former leader described  country as currently in  state of “hemorrhage” under  administration of Marcos.

Duterte said everything is now up to the military if they want to continue serving a President who he alleged is “addicted to illegal substances.”

“How does  military protect  Constitution…by protecting  ‘drug addict’ President…if you want  redress of grievance, there is no urgent remedy…it is only  military who can correct it,” Duterte said.

Duterte’s tirades came in the wake of Congress’ move to conduct  all-out investigation on his daughter, who earlier had claimed contracting  hitman to kill the President, First Lady Liza Marcos and Speaker Martin Romualdez if  supposed plot to kill her succeeds.

Duterte is also under investigation by  International Criminal Court for alleged crimes against humanity in implementation of his drug war during his presidency.

Angelica Panganiban updates  her ‘bone death’

By Cynthia Montojo

Inline image

“All good naman…as you can see, nakapupunta na ako sa mga events,” actress Angelica Panganiban shared her journey in dealing with Avascular Necrosis or so-called “bone death.”

Angelica shared her second hip surgery for Avascular Necrosis has been successful so far.

“Unlike before na hirap ako talaga, nasa house lang. ..I’m getting better and stronger,” she affirmed.

Although her second surgery was already as far back as last July, the star said she is still recovering from it.

“Actually, I’m still recovering right now…but as advised by  doctor, I can go around na, kasi walking is advised talaga para faster ‘yung recovery to strengthen my legs.”

She did not know yet if she had to undergo another surgery.

“We’ll never know talaga kasi  right side of my hip is hindi pa talaga s’ya okay, so hindi natin alam kung ano talaga ang future ng right side,” she said.

Despite  uncertainties, she is happy since at least nowdays, she can already play and even carry her baby.

“’Yun ang isa sa I’m very thankful dahil kahit papa’no… nagpapakarga na s’ya sa’kin, naalala na n’ya na ay, pwede kay mama na magpa-karga.”

Because of her condition, Angelica still cannot run as she used to do before anytime she wants to de-stress.

“But of course, hindi pa rin ako nakakatakbo,” she said.

She, however, takes it a day at a time and does not lose hope that she would fully recover.

“‘Yon, slowly, we’ll get there!”

Neri Naig-Miranda to celebrate Christmas in jail-SEC

By Cynthia Montojo

Inline image

“Siya ay naghikayat ng mga investments d’un sa Beyond Skin Care… yun ‘yung kumpanyang iniimbestigahan,” Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)  Director Filbert Catalino Flores III explained former actress Neri Naig-Miranda would likely spend Christmas behind bars, and not at home with husband Chito Miranda and their sons Miggy and Manuel, after her scheduled arraignment yesterday was moved to January 9.

Philippine National Police (PNP) Southern Police District (SPD) confirmed  that the Parokya ni Edgar frontman’s wife is still detained in the Pasay City Jail female dormitory.

Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 111 staff said Neri’s arraignment for alleged Securities Regulation Code violations was moved to January 9 following  motion to quash or to dismiss complaints.

Pasay RTC has since requested SEC and  prosecution for comment on the motion.

In  social media post  Chito claimed certain “Chanda” is the alleged real culprit behind Neri’s incarceration.

“Wala siyang kinuhang pera sa ibang tao, lahat ng pera nila na kay Chanda, ang may-ari ng Dermacare,” Chito said.

SEC released in September 2023 said that Chanda Atienza, chief operating officer of Dermacare-Beyond Skin Care Solutions, allegedly offered “agreements” with potential “franchise partners,” with promise of returns amounting to 12.6% interest per quarter for  five-year period, in addition to free services from the beauty clinic chain,  “unauthorized investment solicitation without SEC registration.”

In the same advisory, SEC warned that even Dermacare’s endorsers, influencers, brokers, dealers, salesmen, agents and promoters may also be charged.

Neri, in a Sept. 1, 2023 Facebook post

Neri MirandaHello friends and valued followers. I would like to take this opportunity to inform you all that I am no longer …

, informed her followers that she is no longer connected with Dermacare.

“I want to emphasize that any transactions or engagements made under my name by Dermacare are unauthorized and have been conducted without my consent…if you come across any instances where my name is being used in connection with Dermacare,.. I kindly request you to inform me promptly,” she added.

Neri is facing 14 counts of violation of Securities Regulation Code (Section 28 of Republic Act 8799), in addition to estafa, for allegedly endorsing Dermacare’s call for investors even if company is unauthorized to solicit public investments because  company is not registered and operating without a license to sell stocks, SEC explained.

Former  actress is also facing syndicated estafa,, according to Presidential Decree 1689, is “committed by  syndicate consisting of five or more persons formed with the intention of carrying out unlawful or illegal act, transaction, enterprise or scheme.”

“The accused, who is listed as Rank #7 (Station Level) for November 2024, was apprehended after a warrant of arrest was served” by Pasay RTC on Sept. 18, 2024, and Oct. 16, 2024, PNP’s SPD said.

Neri invited her fans to join her in  15th PHILSME Business Expo in SMX Convention in Pasay City last November 23. SPD confirmed that the former actress was arrested that same day at the basement of  mall’s convention center.

Bail was set at P126,000.00 for each of the 14 alleged securities violation counts, totaling to over P1.7 million; while “no stated bail” is set for estafa, SPD added in a Facebook post.

Chito, in his Facebook post, confirmed that Neri was arrested last week even if she has not reportedly received any notice or criminal complaint.

“Tapos last week, bigla na lang s’yang inaresto for the same case kahit hindi pa sya binigyan ng notice na may bagong criminal complaint pala laban sa kanya, and ‘di n’ya na-defend ‘yung sarili nya,” he said.

Yesterday, he thanked his uncle, lawyer and former Sen. Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan, for offering legal services to Neri.

According to Kiko, Neri is also  victim of Estafa criminals.

“Ang product endorser ay isang talent at kung walang koneksyon o kinalaman sa ownership or management at operations nung kumpanya na involved sa iligal na operations ay hindi dapat managot sa nasabing iligal na gawain,” Pangilinan said in  Instagram post.

“Nabiktima din si Neri ng mga estafador at ang dapat habulin dito ay ang may ari at nagpapatakbo ng kumpanya.”

Ruby slippers fr ‘The Wizard of Oz’ up for auction, could go for P176M

By Cynthia Montojo

Inline image

“They are legendary like no other,” Nikki Hale, manager of special projects at Heritage, said of distinctive sequin covered court shoes,  topped with bows.

Ruby slippers worn by actress Judy Garland in classic film “The Wizard of Oz” will be sold at auction next month, nearly 20 years after they were stolen.

Heritage Auctions showed off  magical footwear in London before they go under  hammer in Dallas on December 7, with predictions they could sell for up to $3 million (P176 million).

“‘The Wizard of Oz’ really stands  test of time as  cult classic, iconic film that anywhere across the world, people know what ‘The Wizard of Oz’ is.”

“You see them when she’s clicking the heels to go home…you see them when she starts her adventure, when she goes down Munchkinland, ..they are absolutely  Holy Grail as far as movie memorabilia,” Hale added.

Only four pairs made for the 1939 film still survive and those on sale have belonged to a collector since 1970.

They were kept in the Judy Garland Museum in her home town of Grand Rapids, Minnesota, until they mysteriously disappeared in 2005.

Despite  six-figure reward and  involvement of  FBI, it was not until 2018 that they were finally tracked down.

“They were recovered, apparently buried in  Tupperware box, underground,” said Hale.

Perpetrator  of  theft, Terry Martin, admitted taking them and said he did so because he believed they were encrusted with real rubies.

Now 76, he was given  suspended prison sentence in January this year.

Other memorabilia from “The Wizard of Oz” will also be on sale, including Garland’s wigs, film posters and photographs, as well as other items such as  wooden game board from “Jumanji” with Robin Williams.

Rizal’s  ‘Josephine Sleeping’ going for P7M at auction

By Cynthia Montojo

Inline image

“Josephine Sleeping,” Jose Rizal made during his Dapitan exile and is said to be one of his last works of art, has  selling price of P7 million for  auction on November 30.

Sculpture  by Jose Rizal inspired by his wife Josephine Bracken is one of the many items going under  hammer at Leon Gallery’s upcoming Kingly Treasures Auction.

sculpture  is 2.5 inches tall, 9.5 inches long, and 2.75 inches wide, and has “Rizal” written on its bottom left, coming from  family of his sister Narcisa.

“Josephine lies outstretched on  classical Roman-style couch with  head-rest, covered in  thin blanket  outlines her waist and thighs,” Leon Ma. Guerrero III described  sculpture in “The First Filipino.” “A hand modestly covers one breast, she half-smiles innocently in her sleep, tresses parted over her forehead.”

Guerrero said  scultpure depicts Josephine as “mother, child, and wife all at once” and “an intimate and happy depiction of his life and love, a rare exception to his allegorical themes of machismo, knowledge, and strength.”

“If Rizal can be said to have ever loved anyone else but the Filipino Nation, then it must be said that he loved Josephine; he was her husband twice over, her open lover in defiance of all his innate propriety and sensibility; she was the one woman with whom he shared that most jealously prized of all his possessions, his name, and also his heart’s intimacies,” he added.

Other valuable items going under the hammer are Fernando Zobel’s “Orilla 69. En Amarillo y Gris,” “Tomas II,” “Azul sobre pardo (Saeta 258);” Carlos “Botong” Francisco’s “Tinikling No. 2;” Benedicto Cabrera’s “Sabel;” Jose Joya’s “Murmurllo;” and Felix Hidalgo’s “Portrait of Raimunda Chiudian Roxas.”

There are also many paintings by Fernando Amorsolo including “Rice Fields,” “Under the Mango Tree,” “Lying Nude,” “A Man Leading Bullock Carriages at Sunset,” “Baguio Trail,” “Market Scene,” “Bamboo Bridge over a River,” and “Lavanderas.”

Kingly Treasures Auction will take place on November 30, 2 in the afternoon in Leon Gallery in Makati City.

VP security to be replaced

By Nidz Godino

Inline image

“There were rumors that  security for the Vice President will be pulled out by  AFP. ..that is not true. ..so,  story here is that we received  subpoena from  PNP calling  members of  VPSPG for investigation,” Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP)  chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. said. government is replacing  head and members of  Vice Presidential Security and Protection Group (VPSPG) with  new contingent from  AFP and Philippine National Police (PNP).

In  speech during  leadership summit at Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City, Brawner said they received  subpoena from  PNP  called for members of  VPSPG to be investigated due to commotion at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC) in Quezon City over the weekend.

Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio, claims there are threats to her life, said she would refuse the new security contingent and would instead rely on her own team, being put together by friends.

Brawner clarified  he is not taking over  VPSPG but is replacing personnel including its commander, Col. Raymund Dante Lachica, because of ongoing police and legislative investigations.

“There is investigation..so we followed  subpoena and what we will do is we are just going to temporarily replace them with  contingent from  PNP and from  AFP,” he explained.

Brawner told reporters  not yet clear if all VPSPG personnel will be replaced, since all are still under study.

Brawner also gave assurance that military will continue to protect and will not allow any harm to come to Vice President Sara Duterte.

“We will not leave her because  security of  Vice President is still of primary concern to us…because if there’s  untoward incident, let’s say something happens to the Vice President, this may be  start of disorder….because according to what she said, she will take actions against the President, the First Lady and the Speaker of the House, we don’t want that to happen…what if there are some groups there that may do something to the Vice President just to blame it on another and then that could cause chaos…so we will not allow that, we will not allow that….so we will still protect  our Vice President” ,Brawner said.

PNP public information officer Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo said  25 officers from Police Security and Protection Group were assigned to Duterte’s security detail on Tuesday.

Fajardo said  reassignment of  police officers to  VPSPG was upon  request of AFP in anticipation of  possible recall of military personnel from Duterte’s security detail.

PNP earlier recalled 75 police officers from Duterte’s security detail. Thirty-one other PNP personnel were retained but they were under-utilized, Fajardo said.

“This is again  prerogative of our Vice President, that’s why they were recalled since they are under-utilized,” she said.

On Duterte’s claim  she has been receiving threats to her security, Fajardo said they have no information of any threat to the Vice President’s life.

Vice President Duterte’s alleged assassination plot against President Marcos, First Lady Liza Marcos and Speaker Martin Romualdez may be considered as terrorism under  Anti-Terror Law, according to Department of Justice (DOJ).

Citing Section 4 of Republic Act 11479 or Anti-Terror law, Justice Undersecretary Jesse Andres said  punishable acts include engaging in acts intended to cause death or serious bodily injury to any person or endangers  person’s life.

“If you engage in acts intended to harm or cause  death of other individuals, that’s part of terrorism. Especially if the purpose is to intimidate and create an atmosphere of fear,” Andres said.

He pointed out that  threat to the President’s life is  national security matter, considering that the one accused of plotting against him is the Vice President.

National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) earlier served  subpoena to Duterte to explain her declaration of allegedly hiring hitman to kill Marcos if  alleged plot against her succeeds.

In  subpoena, NBI noted Duterte’s “possible violation” of Republic Act 11479 or “Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020,”  enacted when her father Rodrigo Duterte was president.

Meanwhile, Brawner is confident that despite what is currently happening in the country, he “is not worried at all” because he is sure that “ whole Armed Forces of the Philippines will remain professional and competent.”

“So there is no need for loyalty check because our soldiers and officers are loyal to their oath…when we entered service, we took vow, we took an oath and, in that oath, we said  we will always defend Constitution of the Philippines, defend our country and defend the duly constituted authorities. ..so, in that aspect, I am not worried,” he said.

The AFP chief also stressed that  military will not heed calls for it to intervene in what former president Duterte described as “ fractured government that only  military can fix.”

“But that is not our job…our job is to protect Republic of the Philippines, protect its people, defend our territory and defend our sovereignty and our sovereign rights,” he emphasized.

He said past cases of military adventurism will no longer succeed today and  AFP “will not take  law into our own hands. We will remain professional. If they want change, we have  process for that under our democracy. So, let’s allow that to happen.”

Brawner added that while each and everyone may have their own political beliefs that are respected, for soldiers such beliefs and opinions cannot be openly declared or discussed.
