FMJ to ax Bantag-Remulla

“By the way, that was supposed to be treasure hunt for Yamashita treasure. ..originallyā¦ I was told by Director General Bantag about it.. I told him to stop it,” Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla said suspended Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Director General Gerald Bantag is looking for Yamashita treasure so he ordered excavation inside New Bilibid Prison (NBP). Remulla said this was what Bantag told him around August or September of this year 2022. Authorities recently found an excavation site at NBP. Bantag claimed this was for a swimming pool project, joint venture with private firm.
Remulla also said this was invalid since this was not approved by either former president Rodrigo Duterte or then Justice secretary Menardo Guevarra.
“That’s invalid because they have no authority of the secretary of justice and authority from the president of the Republic of the Philippines, it cannot be considered valid contractā¦even if they bring that to court, we call that an unenforceable contractā¦that’s unenforceable ” the Justice chief said.
Remulla also said he will formally ask President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to dismiss Bantag.
“When I have the chanceā¦it’s not very urgent to me right now,” he said.
Bantag is currently on preventive suspension following investigation being conducted on killing of broadcaster Percival “Percy Lapid” Mabasa in October. Bantag has been tagged as mastermind.
The Yamashita treasure or gold, according to research, is the alleged war loot in Southeast Asia that was stolen by Japanese Imperial forces, led by General Tomoyuki Yamashita, during World War 2. It was named after Yamashita, dubbed as the “Tiger of Malaya”, after conquering Malaya within 70 days from the British. The gold was reported to have been buried in the Philippines although it has never been found, prompting historians to dismiss the treasure as non-existent.
