Funding NBP regionalization eyed under 2024 budget – Angara
By Nidz Godino
“Ang sabi po ng kalihim dito sa inyong katanungan is that isasama po nila sa 2024 budget dahil masusi po nilang pinag-aaralan itong regionalization,” Senator Sonny Angara who defended budget of Justice Department (DOJ) on the Senate floor, said DOJ is eyeing to fund regionalization of New Bilibid Prison (NBP) under 2024 budget.
Angara, Finance committee chairman, disclosed this after Senator Robin Padilla asked for updates on plans to regionalize national penitentiary.
He reiterated plans to put up prison facilities in Mindoro and Nueva Ecija to decongest NBP and to dissolve syndicates inside national penitentiary in Muntinlupa City.
Padilla expressed his delight on the updates provided by DOJ, saying regionalization of NBP is “concrete solution” in addressing overpopulation in the national penitentiary and the problem of drug trade inside prison facility.
This will also help in rehabilitation of prisoners as their families can visit persons deprived of liberty, Padilla concluded.
