MMDA to designate PUV stops along Commonwealth Ave

“There should be designated bus and jeepney stops for passengers as part of road safety… it’s about time to instill road discipline among all passenger vehicles,” Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) acting chairman Carlo Dimayuga III said during meeting held with Quezon City local government unit (LGU), transport groups, and various jeepney operators MMDA is eyeing to create designated stop for public utility vehicles (PUVs) along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City.
Dimayuga said putting up designated bus and jeepney stops aim to ensure safety of road users in line with setting up of exclusive motorcycle lanes along the road.
Dimayuga sought assistance of Quezon City LGU and jeepney operators in identifying loading and unloading areas along Commonwealth Avenue.
“Through this, we could strategize on how PUVs could maneuver to their designated stops…we would like to confine pedestrians to designated loading and unloading areas,” the MMDA acting chairman stressed.
Pasang Masda president Obet Martin, on the other hand, supports plan of MMDA.
“I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Chairman Dimayuga for addressing concern of jeepney operators…we consider it as welcome development,” Martin said.
MMDA earlier said at least 1,010 motorcycle-related accidents were reported in Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City from January to August 2022.MMDA spokesperson Atty. Melissa Carunungan said increase in number of accidents and safety of motorists were main concerns in installing motorcycle lane in Commonwealth Avenue.
She added that target date for installation of motorcycle lanes is by the end of following month November.
