9.5K of 42K Ph bgys still ‘drug-affected’
By Nidz Godino
“Meron na lang tayong natitirang 9,590 drug-affected barangays out of 42,046 barangays in the country,” Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA)chief Wilkins Villanueva said during Senate budget hearing illegal drugs still affect total of 9,590 barangays in the country.
According to him, PDEA would allot budget for clearing of these drug-affected barangays. Under the National Expenditure Program for 2023, PDEA has proposed budget of P3.009 billion.
Villanueva said among challenges of addressing drug problem in the country was evolving modus operandi of syndicates.
He said perpetrators are no longer using seaports in delivering supplies of illegal drugs in the country because authorities are monitoring them.
They are now coursing supply of drugs through international waters. The containers with illegal drugs are being dropped in the middle of waters and let them drift near shore where perpetrators will pick them up.
With this, perpetrators no longer need to use boats, which may alert authorities about illegal activity, Villanueva concluded.
