National  COVID-19 booster week Sept 26-29

By Nidz Godino

“All government agencies are to implement sector specific policies at lalo na ‘yung magpo-provide ng incentives especially providing incentives to encourage individuals to get boosters…katuwang po natin dito ang iba’t ibang mga ahensiya upang maisakatuparan itong national booster week natin,” Department of Health (DOH) head assistant to the officer-in-charge Secretary Lorra Angelia Sayson said DOH will conduct national COVID-19 booster week on September 26 to 29 to ramp up  booster uptake among general population.

The Inter-Agency Task Force for Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) also recommended such, in line with its proposal to make  wearing of face masks outdoors optional by year-end.

Pending President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s formal approval,  IATF has proposed  voluntary wearing of face masks in open spaces or non-crowded outdoor areas with good ventilation, provided COVID-19 booster uptake in the country improves.

Based  on DOH’s national COVID-19 vaccination dashboard, only 18.5 million Filipinos have received their booster shots as of September 9.

This is still  far cry from  72.7 million Filipinos who are now fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Sayson said throughout four-day national booster week by end-September,  government is eyeing to administer more booster shots in order to achieve its PinasLakas target by October 8.

The PinasLakas campaign aimed to give booster doses to 50% of the country’s eligible population or 23.8 million Filipinos within first 100 days of Marcos administration.

DOH officer-in-charge Maria Rosario Vergeire earlier said DOH increased its target to more than 400,000 COVID-19 booster shots per day after campaign failed to meet its daily goals since it started.

One of the reasons DOH sees for  refusal to get booster dose is that nine out of 10 Filipinos are “overconfident” about  protection elicited by the first two COVID-19 doses and see no need of getting  booster shot.

DOH  logged 3,165 new COVID-19 cases, bringing nationwide tally to 3,904,133.

Active cases, increased to 26,074.

A total of 1,287 new recoveries were recorded.

DOH recorded 2,230 new COVID-19 cases, increasing total nationwide caseload to 3,906,269.

Based on the DOH’s latest data, country’s active cases slightly decreased to 25,684 from 26,074. This is 15th straight day with fewer than 30,000 active infections.

The number of recoveries climbed to 3,818,281 while death toll rose by 16 to 62,304.

According to the DOH,  regions with  most cases in the last two weeks were  National Capital Region with 9,182 followed by Calabarzon with 3,854 and Central Luzon with 2,385.

The Health Department said at least 16,835 individuals were tested, while 316 testing labs submitted data on September 10. It said bed occupancy in the country was 26.7%, with 7,669 beds occupied, while 21,093 were vacant.

Earlier in the day, OCTA Research group said  slow uptick in COVID-19 infections was observed in NCR, as indicated in increases in  reproduction number and positivity rate.

In a tweet, OCTA Research fellow Dr. Guido David said NCR’s seven-day COVID-19 positivity rate went up from 12.1% on September 2, to 13.3% on September 9.

NCR’s reproduction number or number of people infected by one case, also climbed from 0.93 on August 31 to 1.11 on September 7.

“The reproduction number has increased to greater than 1, which means infections are increasing,” David concluded.
