FMJ meet OFWs in Indonesia
By Nidz Godino
“We have full set of meetings and much work to accomplish during this trip, but it will not be complete without meeting our kababayans in Indonesia and Singapore,” President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. citing information from Presidential Security Group, the Office of the Press Secretary (OPS) landed at CGK Airport at 12:35 in the afternoon.
“And I look forward to sharing with them our commitment and plans for enhancing government’s efforts to protect rights and ensure welfare of our overseas Filipinos, and I convey my appreciation for their support and valuable contributions to our country,” President Marcos stressed.
Not long after his arrival in the country Marcos, accompanied by First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos and son Ilocos Norte 1st District Representative Sandro Marcos, paid a visit to members of the Filipino community in Jakarta.
He was warmly welcomed at the event at the Fairmont Hotel, where mood was similar to when he was still campaigning in the presidential race.
“Basta kasama mga Pilipino, masaya talaga ‘no…nakuha pati kanta ko eh,” President Marcos said in his message.
There are some 7,448 Filipinos in Indonesia, according to the Department of Migrant Workers. Most Filipinos hold managerial and technical or professional level positions such as company directors, engineers, accountants, supervisors and teachers.
President Marcos ‘ visit to Indonesia, which will be from September 4 to 6, was at the invitation of Indonesian President Joko Widodo.
The two leaders are expected to discuss active and multifaceted cooperation in defense, maritime border security, economic development, and people-to-people exchanges.
Also, the two countries are set to renew 1997 Agreement on Cooperative Activities in the Field of Defense and Security, which will be mother framework for all defense and security cooperation with Indonesia.
Vice President Sara Duterte has been designated as the country’s officer-in-charge following President Marcos Jr.’s state visits to Indonesia and Singapore this week.
A copy of the Special Order No. 75, designating Duterte as officer-in-charge, was released by OPS to the media.
President Marcos left the country for Indonesia “to put the Philippines in a position where we have strong alliances and strong partnerships necessary for us to come out of the post-pandemic economy.”
After his visit to Indonesia, the President will be going to Singapore in which he is also expected to harvest investment deals that are in line with priorities of his administration.
Cheers from our kababayans greeted President Marcos Jr. as he allotted his first day in Indonesia to the Filipino community in Jakarta.
The President said the Filipinos’ good standing in Indonesian society has contributed to sustaining trade, tourism, people-to-people links between two countries.
“Your success here makes us all back home, very, very, very proud…every time we hear news of yet another success by our OFWs, we are always saying thank you for the glory you bring to our country, for the good name, that you burnish and polish of our country while you are abroad…iba talaga ang galing ng Pinoy saan man sa mundo ,” said the President.
In his speech, President Marcos did not mention case of Mary Jane Veloso, the Filipina who was on death row in Indonesia due to drug-related charges. Press Secretary Trixie Cruz-Angeles was uncertain if the issue will be brought before Indonesian officials.
“We cannot even guess as to why, but because it is of such sensitive nature then we proceed with deliberation if we proceed at all… I am not saying that we’ll be proceeding with anything…but the President is aware of the issue…beyond that, we cannot discuss,” Angeles said at separate presser.
For Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) chief Susan Ople, Marcos’ meeting with the Filipino community is symbolic as it shows he is prioritizing welfare of OFWs.
“I think it’s symbolic na sa unang araw pa lang, gusto niya na ang una niyang maka-meet iyong ating OFWs … so it tells a lot about his concern for our workers. ..and please remember, after elections, hindi naman pa siya nakaikot para kumustahin sila …so this is the first time,” Ople said.
Ople would have separate meeting with Filipino community leaders in Indonesia to hear their grievances and concerns.
In 2021, remittances from overseas Filipinos in Indonesia reached US$ 17.5 million, the DFA said
The President has been vocal about his plans to ensure welfare of the overseas Filipino workers, including automation of their contracts, the One Repatriation Command Center, and the National Reintegration Program.
