Upcat suspension looms

By Marlon Callueng

Ensuring safety and well-being of more than 100,000 applicants and around 1,6000 personnel who will administer the examination nationwide remains a consideration on deciding to push through or suspend University of the Philippines College Admission Test (Upcat).

UP university councils were still deliberating whether or not to hold UP Upcat in academic year 2023-2024. Chancellors from eight UP constituent units and members of the UP President’s Advisory Council have agreed to discuss with their respective university councils proposal of the UP Office of Admission to suspend Upcat. UP Office of Admissions Director Francisco de los Reyes said  proposal to suspend Upcat was in light of concerns about public health situation and logistics challenges.

The admission test has been suspended in 2021 and 2022 due to Covid-19 pandemic.

Decisions on college admission for  two academic years were based primarily on high school grades from Grades 8 to 11, as well as consideration of socioeconomic and geographic factors.

Members of the university councils, highest policymaking body in each UP constituent university, are the chancellor, professors, associate professors and assistant professors of each UP unit.

UP is expected to make Upcat-related announcements after  discussions of the university councils in the eight UP units , Baguio, Cebu, Diliman, Los Baños, Manila, Mindanao, Open University and the Visayas.
