DOH on Ph loosening social distancing protocols

By J.Lo

“That’s the direction,” Department of Health (DOH) officer in charge Maria Rosario Vergeire said when asked at a press briefing if the country would do the same Philippines will eventually loosen its COVID-19 protocols on social distancing in the same way that United States through its Center for Disease Control and Prevention has already done.

In its updated guidelines, US CDC only recommended avoiding crowded areas or to keep  distance from others. It previously recommended six-feet distance between individuals.

Vergeire said DOH had already started to shift its focus when it modified its COVID-19 bulletins, which previously stressed  number of cases.

“We wanted to shift mindset of our citizens that we are here to live with  virus…because we know that  virus will stay,” Vergeire said.

What’s important, Vergeire said, is to protect most vulnerable, keep  health care system from getting overwhelmed, and to prevent as much as possible severe and critical cases, and deaths.

Vergeire earlier said that country remained at low risk for COVID-19 despite  slight nationwide increase in admissions to intensive care units.

The National Capital Region (NCR) had slight increase in its daily positivity rate over past three days, but it was not clear if positivity rate has already peaked in the region, independent group OCTA Research reported.

In a tweet, OCTA fellow Dr. Guido David reported that NCR had daily positivity rate of 17.9% as of Thursday, August 11.

“With slight increases over past 3 days, it is not yet clear if positivity rate has already peaked in  NCR, but  trendline looks flat at the moment,” David said.

The positivity rate refers to  percentage of people who were found positive for COVID-19 among  total number of individuals tested.

The OCTA Research previously reported that NCR’s one-week positivity rate decreased from 17.4% on August 6 to 15.9% on August 9.

David has said  COVID-19 wave in the country was lasting longer than expected and could continue until the “ber” months.

The Philippines on Friday logged 4,661 new COVID-19 cases, highest in a week , increasing  nationwide COVID-19 tally to 3,823,084.

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) urged local government units (LGUs) to be more vigilant and reinforce measures against COVID-19 ahead of  projected increase in cases.

Interior Secretary Benhur Abalos issued the call after DOH said  COVID-19 infections are projected to increase at least 19,000 per day by August 31.

Abalos said LGUs must guard their respective localities to address  possible surge in the coming days.

“We are calling on our LGUs to monitor the COVID-19 cases in their respective areas… we are still in  pandemic and we count on our local officials to lead this war, especially in the coming months where alarming numbers of COVID-19 cases are projected,” Abalos said in a statement.

“Many of our fellow Filipinos have jobs in Metro Manila…this is the economic center of the country, so its defense must be strong and we can prevent  increase of cases that may spread to other parts of the country,” he stressed.

Philippines’ daily new COVID-19 case tally was back in 4,000 range on Thursday, as 4,533 new infections were recorded by  Health Department.

In the recent two weeks,  National Capital Region (NCR) topped list with 15,700, followed by Calabarzon with 10,098, Central Luzon with 5,189, Western Visayas with 2,842, and Central Visayas with 2,167.

Abalos also urged public to support government’s vaccination efforts, including  “PinasLakas” campaign, in  bid to ramp up  booster coverage in the country amid  rising COVID-19 infections.

“I urge all of you to support  government’s vaccination efforts such as PinasLakas…vaccines have carried us through  murk of  pandemic…we are able to go back to our old ways because of them kaya sana ay makita ng ating mga kababayan ang malaking tulong na ito,” the DILG Chief said.

As campaign failed to meet its daily goals since its kick off,  DOH need to increase their target, and boost 443,892 individuals and vaccinate 20,774 senior citizens daily to achieve the target by October 8.

US Ambassador to the Philippines MaryKay Carlson announced on Friday that she is in isolation after testing positive for COVID-19.

On her Twitter post, Carlson said she only experienced mild symptoms.

“It was bound to happen sometime…Kind of amazing I made it 2.5 years. Isolating at home with only mild symptoms. So glad to be vaccinated and boosted with the safe and effective Pfizer vaccine. Looking forward to recovering and experiencing more of the Philippines!” Carlson said.

“In the meantime, I’d love suggestions for good binge-worthy movies and shows to watch!” she added.
