Senate, no guest for next 3 weeks — Zubiri
By Nidz Godino
“Due to rising COVID-19 cases in the last week, where we had three of our colleagues testing positive for COVID-19, during our caucus senators decided to tighten our health and safety protocols,” Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri said during the Senate session Senate of the Philippines will be implementing stricter protocols inside building after three senators tested positive for COVID-19.
“Effective Monday, August 15, for three weeks, we will have lockdown for guests…we’ll receive no guests for three weeks except for resource persons which will be limited to two per agency or organization…the others could participate remotely,” he said.
Zubiri said resource persons who will enter the building are required to present negative RT-PCR COVID-19 test taken 24 hours prior to their scheduled meeting inside Senate or negative antigen COVID-19 test taken 12 hours prior to their entry.
Self-administered COVID-19 tests without valid certification will not be honored, he stressed.
During committee hearings and plenary sessions, Zubiri said each senator can bring only two members of their staff.
However, chairpersons of committee can bring more staff members during hearings.
“We beg the indulgence of the general public… just kung hindi po natamaan ang mga senador, masama dito e sunod-sunod po ang pagtama sa ating mga kasamahan sa Senado and we just want to be safe…we have members with comorbidities, staff with comorbidities, according to the DOH and OCTA Research… cases will peak in the next weeks…so maybe we could give ourselves a bit of safety net for the next few weeks at least in the Senate ” he said.
In span of one week, it was reported that Senators Alan Peter Cayetano, Imee Marcos and Cynthia Villar all tested positive for COVID-19.
The Department of Health (DOH) registered 3,181 new COVID-19 infections, increasing nationwide tally to 3,813,952.
This was an increase from 2,618 COVID-19 cases reported.
Based on the latest data, active case tally dropped to 36,035 from 36,666.
In the recent two weeks, the National Capital Region reported 15,804 cases, followed by Calabarzon with 10,049; Central Luzon with 5,102; Western Visayas with 2,760; and Central Visayas with 2,147.
The DOH said country’s recovery tally climbed to 3,717,028 with 3,786 new ones.
At least 25 new deaths were logged as the tally increased to 60,889.
A total of 8,488 beds were occupied, while 20,136 were vacant as the bed occupancy in the country slightly increased to 29.7% as of Monday, August 8.
A total of 24,569 individuals were tested, while 326 testing labs submitted data as of August 8, the DOH said.
The Philippines has detected 906 more Omicron subvariant BA.5 of the coronavirus disease, DOH officer-in-charge Maria Rosario Vergeire said.
At a press briefing, Vergeire said at least 10 individuals from all regions except Northern Mindanao, Davao Region, Soccsksargen, Caraga, and Bangsamoro region tested positive for BA.5 subvariant.
In its breakdown, DOH said 265 cases came from Western Visayas, 127 from National Capital Region (NCR), 121 from Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), 97 from Cagayan Valley, 73 from Central Luzon, 56 from Calabarzon, 49 from Bicol Region, 40 from Ilocos Region, 39 from Mimaropa, 13 from Zamboanga Peninsula, 12 from Eastern Visayas, and 10 from Central Visayas.
Four returning overseas Filipinos (ROFs) also tested positive for BA.5 sub variant.
Vergeire said total number of BA.5 cases in the country is now at 4,013, based on the latest genome sequencing run.
Of these cases, 814 individuals are also tagged as recovered, 49 are still undergoing isolation, while outcome of others are still being verified.
Six hundred eighty-two of these new cases are also fully vaccinated, 14 are partially vaccinated, while the vaccination status of remaining 210 individuals are still being determined.
All of their exposure, travel histories, and health status are still unknown.
Philippine Genome Center (PGC) Executive Director Dr. Cynthia Saloma said increase in COVID-19 cases in the past weeks may be attributed to Omicron BA.5 subvariant which now comprises about 85% of their sequenced samples.
She added that of the 1,100 to 1,200 samples being sequenced in the country per week, BA.5 was “most predominant variant” detected as compared to other Omicron sub-variants like BA.4, BA.2.12.1, and BA.2.3.
Further, Vergeire said there are 11 additional Omicron BA.4 cases in the country, bringing its total caseload to 115.
Vergeire said that all these 11 fresh BA.4 cases are now tagged as recovered.
Five of them came from Bicol Region, and two each were from Western Visayas, CAR, and NCR.
Of these new cases, nine individuals are fully vaccinated, while vaccination of two others are still being determined.
Their exposure, travel histories, and health status are also still unknown.
There were also seven more Omicron BA.2.12.1 found in the country, which now totals to 181.
