Monthly ‘ayuda’ hiked from P200 to P500
By J.Lo
“I hope this will go a long way to help…huwag sayangin sa e-sabong,” President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered monthly ayuda for country’s poorest of the poor be increased from P200 a month to P500 amid rising cost of fuel and other basic commodities.
President Duterte made the remark following widespread criticisms received by the government’s allocation of P200 a month in cash aid for poorest families identified by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).
“Gawin na nating P500…bahala na ang susunod na presidente, saan siya magnakaw…basta ibigay natin P500,” President Duterte said during ceremonial signing of three measures into law in Malacañang.
President Duterte said P200 was not enough. He told Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez to look for funding so that cash aid could be increased to P500 a month.
“I’d like to announce, sabi ko kay Sonny, on the ground, iyong feedback sa ayuda niya na P200…sabi ko sa kanya, it is too small sa isang buwan, hanap ka ng pera…masyadong mababa ‘yan…it is not enough for a family of three, even four or five, iyong sa baba ang pinakaramaraming anak,” President Duterte said.
He told Dominguez to use all money available to fund P500 monthly allowance and let the next administration deal with consequences.
“It will be an uphill battle,”President Duterte said.
Prices of basic food items have increased by as much as P60, following 11 straight weeks of increases in the pump prices of petroleum products in the country.
Market sellers indicated increases are due to higher costs of transporting products from suppliers.
In several market places, price increases were recorded in the prices per kilogram of chicken to P180 from P170; kasim, pigue to P370 from P350; liempo to P420 from P340 to P360; tomatoes to P140 from P80; ampalaya to P140 from P100; and carrots to P140 from P100.
State-run Land Bank of the Philippines said about 87,500 jeepney drivers nationwide have already received fuel subsidies worth P6,500 each from government during the first week of distribution of the cash aid amid series of increase in fuel prices.
In a statement, Landbank said in close coordination with Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), it has credited fuel subsidies totaling P569 million for existing Pantawid Pasada cash cardholders under the Fuel Subsidy Program as of March 17, 2022.
More than 377,000 public utility vehicles (PUV) driver-beneficiaries are eligible to receive cash aid under subsidy program.
“Landbank is one with the National Government in providing immediate support interventions to PUV drivers to weather the impact of the fuel price surge…we are working closely with DOTr and LTFRB to complete distribution of fuel subsidy to all beneficiaries nationwide at the soonest time possible,” said Landbank president and CEO Cecilia Borromeo.
Apart from jeepney drivers, Fuel Subsidy Program beneficiaries also include drivers of UV Express units, minibuses, buses, shuttle services, taxis, tricycles, and other full-time ride-hailing and delivery services nationwide.
Beneficiaries without Pantawid Pasada cash cards will be provided cash cards at designated Landbank branches as identified by the LTFRB, the state bank said.
The Pantawid Pasada cash cards can be used to purchase fuel at participating fuel stations nationwide.
Landbank continues to partner with national government agencies to ensure timely, safe and efficient delivery of financial interventions to eligible beneficiaries.
