Bakunahan III missed 5-M vaccination target-DOH

By J.Lo

“Even though we did not achieve our five million target, we are still glad we have achieved 3.5 million, which boosted vaccination rate in the entire country,” at the Laging Handa briefing, Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said government has vaccinated at least 3.5 million individuals against COVID-19 at the end of the third wave of “Bayanihan, Bakunahan” program that ran from February 10 to 18, 2022.

Vergeire said number of vaccinated individuals during mass vaccination drive fell short of the government’s target of five million.

Bayanihan, Bakunahan III which was originally scheduled to run from February 10 to 11 was extended until February 18.

Vergeire cited challenges why target was not achieved.

“First, our healthcare workers were divided between Bayanihan, Bakunahan and the children’s vaccination,” Vergeire said.

She stressed number of healthcare workers for the mass vaccination drive were also reduced due to other health-related duties and some of them contracted diseases.

National Task Force Against COVID-19medical consultant Dr. Maria Paz Corrales cited vaccine hesitancy as one of the factors why  5-million target for Bayanihan, Bakunahan was not met.

Vergeire said that 62.3 million Filipinos are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, representing 69.8% of the 77-million target.

Despite improvement in its trends, National Capital Region (NCR) is still at risk for COVID-19, although at the “low risk” level, the OCTA Research group said Saturday.

In a tweet, OCTA Research fellow Dr. Guido David reported that for the period February 12 to 18, NCR’s average daily attack rate (ADAR) improved to 3.36 from 5.49 in the previous week, and its positivity rate improved to 6% from from 9%.

Further, NCR’s healthcare utilization rate decreased from 29% to 26% and its reproduction number decreased slightly from 0.22 to 0.20.

Reproduction rate refers to the number of people infected by one case. A reproduction number that is below 1 indicates that the transmission of the virus is slowing down.

ADAR, on the other hand, pertains to the incidence showing the average number of new cases in a period per 100,000 people.

The positivity rate refers to the percentage of people who were found positive for COVID-19 among the total number of individuals tested.

The data was taken from the information obtained by the DOH for the week of February 12 to 18, and were compared to the period from February 5 to 11.

The Philippines on Friday recorded 2,232 new COVID-19 infections increasing the nationwide tally to 3,648,925.

Of the total number of cases, 65,796 are active; 3,527,720 recovered; and 55,409 died.

DOH encouraged pregnant women to get vaccinated against COVID-19 to protect their babies from risks.

At the Palace briefing, Vergeire said COVID-19 can affect placenta of pregnant women, cause fetal injury and death.

“For mothers who are pregnant, we encourage you to get vaccinated to avoid the risk of stillbirths,” she said.

Citing  British medical journal, Vergeire said 5,000 pregnant women infected by  coronavirus experienced critical care admission, stillbirths, and early neonatal deaths. All of them are unvaccinated.

She also assured public COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective.

Vergeire said only 8 of the over 329,000 vaccinated children aged five to 11 had non-serious adverse events.
