PBA salary cap rule must be reviewed- Guiao
By J.Lo
“Di pa naman nag-a-apply sa amin ngayon, but for other teams and players how do you exercise implementation of the salary cap?” NLEX coach Yeng Guiao felt PBA needed to review its salary cap system amid growing competition with leagues outside the country.
With recent implementation of unrestricted free agency (UFA) rule covering players with expired contracts 7 years after 2014 draft, the league saw 4 players leaving their mother clubs to join other teams.
Nards Pinto, Rodney Brondial, Matt Ganuelas Rosser and Chris Banchero entered free agency and signed up with other PBA clubs.
“Tatanggalin ba ‘yung salary cap na ‘yan o dagdagan o dapat may strict implementation of salary cap?”
Guiao believed if PBA doesn’t do anything about cap, then leagues from other Asian countries might poach local cagers as what happened to some Gilas players.
“Ang problema natin d’yan hindi lang within PBA…ang problema natin d’yan kalaban na natin ang Japan in attracting players, kalaban na rin natin ang Korea, kalaban na natin ang Taiwan,” he said.
“So now you have to revert back and review the salary cap rules.”
Guiao said UFA rule was put in place to give players space to decide which teams they want to play with.
But parity will still have to be maintained, he said.
“Ayaw naman natin nang dahil sa UFA sa isa o dalawang team na lang nagpupunta ang free agents…babalansehin natin ‘yun…the only way to balance that is to review or revaluate our salary cap system,” Guiao said.
As these developed, Coach Yeng Guiao was pleased with the way Matt Nieto got himself adjusted to NLEX’s system as they prepared for the resumption of PBA Governors’ Cup.
Guiao was open to lend former Gilas stalwart to the national team if there is a call from Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas.
“So far we have no request or advice from SBP or PBA… pero kung magkakaroon man, we are very willing to lend him….doon din naman siya galing,” Guiao said.
NLEX picked Nieto in the 2019 special draft and loaned him to the Gilas Pilipinas program. Nieto later opted not to re-sign with the national team program when his contract expired.
“May kontrata siya with SBP, nag-expire na… siguro gusto naman niya maglaro siya sa PBA,” Guiao said… “pero any time time na ipull out siya sa amin, we are willing to lend him to the Gilas program para sa bayan.”
Guiao believed it would also be beneficial for Gilas players to get some playing time in the PBA to further improve their individual skills.
“Sayang naman ‘yung 2 taon na ’yun ang pinaglalaruan lang nila ’yung FIBA windows, then mga small tournaments, mga training camps . . . magbabakasyon ulit sila, bakante ulit sila,..whereas kung nagko-compete sila sa PBA nababatak sila… competition makes you better. ..you are given opportunity to play in different conditions…nakapaglalaro sa PBA, nakakapag-train sa Gilas, nagte-train sa Europe, lalaro sa Jones Cup…du’n gumagaling ang player ,” he said.
Point guard Matt Nieto has inked a three-year contract with NLEX Road Warriors, a week after he was released from Philippine national team program.
The Road Warriors selected Nieto in the special round of 2019 PBA Rookie Draft and the guard has spent the past two years with Gilas Pilipinas program, where he played in FIBA Asia Cup qualifying tournaments.
Nieto signed his contract with NLEX at the Mt. Fuji Japanese Restaurant in Guiguinto, Bulacan, with head coach, general manager Yeng Guiao and team governor Ronald Dulatre present.
Nieto has already practiced with the Road Warriors for two days, with Guiao touting his improvement from the time that he was drafted.
“From what I saw from the player three years ago to the player I’ve seen just recently, I think he has become even better and more matured,” said the coach.
Nieto is expected to help fill the void left by Kiefer Ravena, who is currently in Japan’s B.League playing for the Shiga Lakestars. He will share the backcourt with veterans Kevin Alas, Jericho Cruz, Kris Rosales, and Philip Paniamogan.
Nieto’s signing with NLEX comes days after his twin brother Mike inked a deal with Rain or Shine.
“It’s always been the dream, not only for me, but also for my family, especially my dad,” said Nieto, whose father Jet won two championships with Ateneo de Manila University in the 1980s. “Hindi kasi nag-PBA si daddy… gusto niyang maging doctor, ‘yun na siguro ‘yung greatest regret niya, kaya gusto niya, bata pa lang kami, mag-PBA na kami…this is it…we’re living his dream also,”Matt said.
