EMPAC rails vs corruption as presidential bid kicks off in GenSan
By Nidz Godino
Manny Pacquiao formally launched his campaign in his hometown of General Santos City, renewing his stand against corruption and poverty.
The retired boxing star rallied thousands of his supporters who gathered in front of Oval Stadium despite repeated reminded by authorities to observe social distancing.
Pacquiao said politics has become livelihood in the Philippines, as greed and corruption besmirched country’s reputation in international community.
“Hindi kailangan ang pulitiko sa Pilipinas…ginagawang kabuhayan ang pagsisilbi sa bansa, sisiguraduhin kong bawat Pilipino panalo sa laban ni Manny Pacquiao ” he said.
Prior from his proclamation rally, Pacquiao visited fish port to greet workers. He then proceeded with a motorcade in the early afternoon before heading to Oval Plaza.
Members of his senatorial lineup, including broadcaster Raffy Tulfo and former Senate secretary Lutgardo “Lutz” Barbo and local politicians attended the event. Actress Bianca Manalo was also there to represent her boyfriend Sen. Win Gatchalian.
Pacquiao’s running mate, former Manila Mayor Lito Atienza, was not able to physically attend the rally, but he rallied the crowd through an online speech.
Also present in the rally was Pacquiao’s wife Jinkee Pacquiao and his mother Mommy Dionisia.
Pacquiao also unveiled his 22-round priority agenda, which covers his plans for free housing, education, agriculture, livelihood, technology and transportation, and improved health system.
The rally ended with fireworks lighting up the sky.
“Para magkaroon po ng ayuda muli at tulong sa iba’t ibang industriyang natamaan ng COVID-19 tulad ng turismo, micro, small and medium enterprises, at iba pang industriyang nabugbog ng pandemiya,” Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri said from providing education and jobs to reducing cost of electricity, senatorial candidates under the slate of Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and Sara Duterte presented their platforms and programs they said will ease burden of Filipinos, especially amid COVID-19 pandemic.
Present during the proclamation rally at the Philippine Arena were Zubiri, Senator Sherwin Gatchalian, former presidential spokesman Hilario Roque Jr., former Defense chief Gilbert Teodoro, former Quezon City mayor Herbert Bautista, former Public Works secretary Mark Villar, lawyer Larry Gadon, former senator Jinggoy Estrada and House Deputy Speaker Rodante Marcoleta.
House Deputy Speaker Loren Legarda, another senatorial aspirant, delivered video message while former senator Gregorio Honasan was represented by his wife, Jane.
Zubiri said he wants another term in the Senate to push passage of Bayanihan 3, which will provide aid to workers who were affected by pandemic.
He also vowed to build more specialty hospitals across the country.
Gatchalian will push for quality education anew.
Gadon vowed to create more jobs for Filipinos if elected.
In a pre-recorded video message, Legarda said she will push for amendment of Public Employment Service Office or PESO Law so its services would reach barangay level.
Estrada also vowed to create more jobs for Filipinos.
“Noon at ngayon, tuloy ang laban ko para sa manggagawang Pilipino…trabaho para sa lahat, trabahong may dignidad,” he said.
Marcoleta will push for a law that will reduce cost of electricity in the country.
Roque thanked President Rodrigo Duterte for starting change in the society as he vowed that the UniTeam would continue these changes.
Bautista, for his part, shared his 30 years of experience that he could offer to the public. He vowed to provide housing projects for Filipinos.
“Housing for all ang bibigay po natin, ‘yung private sector at saka ‘yung government pag nagsanib, mas maraming pabahay ang puwedeng maitulong sa mga kababayan natin,” Bautista said.
Teodoro urged public to support their candidacies as they are individuals who are “forward looking” and whose programs will surely benefit Filipinos.
Villar also called for unity among Filipinos for future generation.
As he was joined by more than a thousand supporters at Kartilya ng Katipunan, Moreno vowed to find ways to improve life and livelihood of Filipinos should he win the presidency.
He made this pledge during Aksyon Demokratiko proclamation rally in Manila, along with other promises meant to give solutions to the country’s problems on health, housing and education.
’yun ang singilin niyo sa akin,” he stressed.
Moreno positioned himself between Marcoses and Aquinos anew.
He stressed why public should back his presidency, and not two of his rivals in the race… Moreno was referring to Vice-President Leni Robredo and former senator Bongbong Marcos, explaining they would only seek vengeance against Marcos and Duterte families.
Moreno shared stage with running mate Dr. Willie Ong, who laid out his plans to find right and safe drug against COVID-19 and other common illnesses should he win in May elections.
. .lalo na ngayong nangyaring COVID-19 pandemic,” Ong said.
The tandem was joined by senatorial candidates Jopet Sison, Carl Balita and Samira Gutoc.
“We are going to use power of the people and bring it back to the people dahil tayo ay kailangan na ng bagong kinabukasan with freedom, development and necessary Filipino honor we all deserve,” Gutoc said.
Sison added…
Cebu 3rd District Representative Pablo John “PJ” Garcia, Taguig Mayor Lino Cayetano, Pateros Mayor Ike Ponce and Caloocan Rep. Egay Erice were also in attendance at the proclamation rally to throw their support for Moreno and his slate.
In the next 90 days of the official campaign for national candidates, Moreno, Ong and their senatorial slate will once again go around the country to woo voters.
” There are those who say the biggest challenge is to prevent a Marcos-Duterte return to power…we agree.,” Partido Lakas ng Masa vice presidential bet Walden Bello said change in the country should not be dependent on political color as he kicks off his campaign for Halalan 2022.
In his speech, Bello worried of a “dead end” if people viewed political change with the change of color as he challenges the bid of presidential daughter Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio and late president’s son Bongbong Marcos.
“But the best way to do that is not by simply changing yellow wrapper that covered up discredited practices of past 35 years of failed elite democracy with wrapper of another color be this blue, green, white, or pink… that is dead end,” Bello stressed.
Bello added that his party was not giving “shallow” diagnosis to the problems of the country emphasizing their platform, not slogan.
“Leody, Luke and I do not offer a superficial diagnosis of what causes our national ills and simply attribute all problems to corruption or bad governance or the weakening of our values as a people, we offer no easy solutions like “forge national unity” of Marcos and Duterte, “reinvigorate our values” of Leni Robredo and Kiko Pangilinan, “reform government” of Ping Lacson and Tito Sotto, or “abolish corruption” of Manny Pacquiao and Lito…these are slogans, not solutions” Bello said.
Bello proposed that the way to defeat their contenders from known dynasties is to offer them a solution that they have a vital role to play.
“The only way to prevent desperate people from being seduced into going back to a nightmarish authoritarian past is by offering them programs that would make them participants in the creation of the future they deserve, a truly democratic Philippines,” he said.
While, acknowledging that some businessmen will not come to terms with their platforms, Bello said what they offer are solutions that would benefit the Filipino people.
“They will brand us as reds, communists . . . there are political dynasties that see government mainly as an institution to be plundered for private wealth accumulation rather than an agent of national development via planning and wealth redistribution. ..they will dismiss us as enemies of the free market or promoters of a totalitarian state, yes, some interests will be hurt by our programs, but only the very few ultra-rich and ultra-powerful for the benefit of the vast majority. The interests of this handful of families contradict the interests of the Filipino people” he said.
Despite not securing permits, PLM pushed through with the campaign launch of its Halalan 2022 candidates. The Commission on Elections earlier said that PLM did not file for permit for their proclamation rally there.
Bello substituted for Raquel Castillo, who filed her certificate of candidacy for vice president under PLM.
Bello is a former House representative of the Akbayan party-list but he resigned in 2015 over political differences with Aquino administration. He is an adjunct professor of sociology at the State University of New York at Binghamton, according to Laban ng Masa.
Partido Lakas ng Masa presidential contender Leody De Guzman kicked off his bid hoping that Halalan 2022 will be chance to change trend in politics.
“It is only up to us to solve our problems, no one else can solve our problem but ourselves, and this election is a good opportunity to change the political trend. It must be the politics of the masses and change the economy, it must be the economy of the masses, the economy of the people, not of the few,” De Guzman said during a speech at the Bantayog ng mga Bayani in Quezon City.
De Guzman said election cycle has circled around politicians luring voters for their votes only to leave after their victory.
“Politicians only deceive us every election to get our vote, they dance for us, entertain us, gives us t-shirts, feed us, gives us money for our fare, and made us happy by their hired artists because they can’t discuss or say in front of us what we have, our problems, all they want is to sit in the office, to sit in Malacañang, but our problems our high prices, unemployment, contractualization, low wages, no housing, they don’t have that problem ” the labor leader said.
The labor leader added that this was also chance to end oppression of poor and marginalized sectors by offering solution to provide social services for them.
” This is an opportunity given to us to end oppression of our people. ..it is no longer possible in the current situation of severe economic crisis of many unemployed, of high prices, of the health crisis, of climate crisis for them to continue to rule because whatever crisis we are experiencing now has big contribution or action the changing government in our government., it is no joke that we are entering into battle…we know our opponents, the rich, the famous, and the powerful, those who have lots of money, but I believe in what history of elections here in our country has taught that I trust our government that every election their voting comes from their desire to have of change…that is what we will offer them, a change in the livelihood and rights of the Filipino masses” De Guzman said.
De Guzman urged his supporters to convince people that only vote for candidate like them, a worker, will help them rise from all injustices in society.
“Let us convince our countrymen that change is not in the trapo candidates, dynasties, famous and rich, not in them, change is in ourselves if we can enjoy and embrace candidates like us and those with a long track record of the struggle for our interests…that is our hope so that we can put an end to decades-long suffering of our people and accumulation of wealth of few in this election, in the course of our struggle, the recognition of our ranks has come a long way. It’s far compared to October, November, December, and even January. We have come a long way, our ranks, our program, our struggle are widely recognized. We still have 3 months from now and in those three months let’s make sure we reach the widest number of citizens, let’s deliver the message of change and change will take place this year, in 2022” he said.
Despite not securing permits, Partido Lakas ng Masa (PLM) pushed through with campaign launch for its Halalan 2022 candidates led by presidential aspirant Leody De Guzman and vice presidential bet Walden Bello at the Bantayog ng mga Bayani in Quezon City on Tuesday.
The Commission on Elections earlier said that PLM did not file for a permit for their proclamation rally there.
Panfilo “Ping” Lacson urged voters to think carefully and only choose worthy leaders not out to steal state funds from the public after 2022 elections.
In his speech during his campaign’s kickoff in his birthplace of Imus City, Cavite, Lacson said choosing wrong leaders may lead to lost future, as this will only rob people’s right to quality education, infrastructure, health programs, and livelihood.
Lacson and his vice presidential running mate, Senate President Vicente Sotto III, took pride in their combined 80 years of public service, making pitch for their competence and experience to address country’s pressing problems.
Lacson said it is not yet too late to choose right leaders in Halalan 2022.
‘pag tayo public servant, ‘pag ikaw pangulo, pangalawang Pangulo, senador, you know people may not be our masters…but definitely, we are your servants,” he said.
Comedian and TV host Vic Sotto, the Senate President’s brother was the night’s surprise guest, endorsing the Lacson-Sotto tandem.
Sen. Sotto’s daughter, Ciara, led the signing of “Magkaisa,” a song originally composed by the Senate President.
Eleven of the tandem’s Senate slate delivered messages either via taped video, proxy, or in-person.
Partido Reporma’s senatorial candidates Guillermo Eleazar, Monsour del Rosario, Minguita Padilla, former senator JV Ejercito, and former Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol were present physically.
Giving VTR messages were guest candidates Antique Rep. Loren Legarda, Sorsogon Gov. Chiz Escudero, and Sen. Richard Gordon.
Audrey Zubiri delivered a message on behalf of her husband Sen. Miguel Zubiri, while Valenzuela District 1 Rep. Wes Gatchalian represented his brother Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian. Alya Honasan also spoke for her brother Gringo Honasan, a former senator.
Speaking to reporters, Lacson and Sotto explained that common or guest candidates were allowed to attend other proclamation rallies as long as they do not endorse their rivals.
Sotto said Zubiri, Gatchalian and Sen. Joel Villanueva asked for their permission to appear in another rally. Asked if former Vice President Jejomar Binay is still included in the tandem’s slate, Sotto answered affirmative.
Sen. Sotto, meanwhile, repeated President Rodrigo Duterte’s statement that the latter will not endorse anyone, claiming the Chief Executive had told him this and Lacson in the presence of Sen. Christopher “Bong” Go.
“The endorsement of President Duterte is gold…but since he decided not to endorse anyone … feeling ko hinahayaan niya ang taumbayan na mag-desisyon,” the Senate President said.
Sotto did not provide additional details when President Duterte told him so. Lacson said it is the President’s prerogative whether he wants to make an endorsement or not.
“They are all qualified, kung sino man sila whoever they are…. those running now are qualified to be president,” he said.
