Guidelines  on self-administered antigen test, soon to be issued

By Nidz Godino

“We are drafting guidelines on how this self-administered test kits will be used… FDA is currently evaluating all of these 11 applications,” Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said the Department of Health (DOH) will be issuing  guidelines on how self-administered antigen test kits will be used while the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is in  final stages of evaluating  registration of  products.

Earlier, the DOH said 11 manufacturers of self-administered antigen test kits have applied to FDA approval.

“We are now in the final stages of evaluation… RITM has already validated two and will be passed to the FDA for their final certification  na dalawang kits na finally na-validate at ipapasa na sa FDA ‘yan for their final certification,” Vergeire said.

Vergeire explained that once  FDA receives all  documents of  applicants, it will undergo an initial evaluation that will then be passed on to the RITM for performance validation.

“This takes four to five days with RITM and then will be returned to the FDA, so all in all the process can take up to seven days” Vergeire said.

While waiting for final FDA certification, DOH official said Health department will issue a policy “by next week” on how self-administered antigen test kits can be used.

She clarified that use of self-administered antigen test kits currently available in the market need guidance from healthcare worker and should not be used at home because wrong use can lead to  false negative result.

“The reliability of antigen test kits would depend on its use…  most accurate result of an antigen test if you use it at the right time and appropriate use, it’s reliability relies on the right timing…antigen tests can only be used if a person has symptoms, and this is within the first five days of illness… it should not be used carelessly, it should only be used if there are symptoms” Vergeire concluded.

OCTA research fellow Dr. Guido David said  COVID-19 reproduction number in  National Capital Region (NCR) has decreased to 0.71 on Tuesday night.

Reproduction rate refers to  number of people infected by one case. A reproduction number that is below 1 indicates transmission of  virus is slowing down.

In a tweet, David said  new COVID-19 infections in NCR could go below 500 by February 14,2022.

“2751 in the NCR, right in the middle of projected range of 2.5k to 3k. Actuals are still tracking below Jan 20 projections, at this rate, new cases in NCR could go below 500 by Feb 14…reproduction number now 0.71 in NCR” the OCTA research fellow said.

David earlier said reproduction number in NCR had gone down to 0.91, adding that it was  confirmation of the downward trend not just in new COVID-19 cases but in active cases as well.

He noted that the decrease of less than 1, recorded on January 21, 2022, was the first time since December 23, 2021.
