“Immediately informed all my Jan 3 physical contacts of my Jan 4 Covid-positive test result which was released only last night, Jan 6 so they can take extra precautions to protect their loved ones and others,” Partido Reporma standard bearer Senator Panfilo Lacson he said in a Twitter post confirmed tested positive for COVID-19 after undergoing an RT-PCR test.
He added..: “thank God no one is exhibiting symptoms…wearing our masks helped much.”
Lacson took a swab test after one of his sons, his driver, and a house helper also tested positive for the disease.
He took another COVID-19 swab test on Thursday as the results of an earlier test he took have yet to be released.
Lacson is the second senator and first presidential contender to contract COVID-19 this year, after cases surged by thousands amid the spread of the omicron variant in the Philippines.
“National and local governments must embark on an aggressive mass testing, mass contact tracing and mass booster shots,” Lacson told reporters in a text message.
“The process to vaccinate 5 to 11-year-olds must be accelerated,” he added.
Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian has also tested positive for COVID-19.
Broadcast journalist Karen Davila said her family has tested positive for COVID-19.
“I think it’s also the perfect opportunity for me to share with the public, as I was seeing that clip, that my own family tested positive for COVID…we are COVID positive after we arrived from holidays, this coming new year, we are recovering quite well,” Davila said.
Davila said it was her 14-year-old son who first tested positive for COVID-19 in an antigen test…she noted that she and her older son have already received their booster shots.
The broadcast journalist experienced fatigue prior to testing positive for COVID-19.
“The first one, I just felt fatigue, and I thought it was because I was on vacation, you know, taking care of the kids.”
The province of Laguna is now under Alert Level 3 starting Friday, January 7, amid an uptick of COVID-19 cases in the area.
“As of yesterday, we already have around 697 active cases,” said provincial health officer Dr. Rene Bagamasbad… “we started around, in December 31, only 35 active cases…but now it’s around 697.”
“The new cases that have been reported is about double, almost double every day,” he added.
The province’s hospital utilization rate remains low, Bagamasbad noted. He adds that they are already preparing for possible increase in the number of patients seeking medical care.
“As of yesterday we had a meeting with some of our district chiefs of the district hospitals, and we’ve already tried to make assessment and preparation, especially in manpower and the other resources, but from our data, we only have 38 patients being admitted in the different hospitals in Laguna…so we still don’t have the same situation in Manila…we still continue to accept and, from previous report coming from Department of Health, Laguna, the utilization of hospitals is still at 24 percent” he said.
He said their provincial government is now encouraging their constituents to get vaccinated.
“We are prioritizing still those who have no vaccination, but we are also encouraging those who are fully vaccinated to get their third shots. So all our vaccination sites, they have their own schedules regarding those boosters, I hope they get their shots, there is no problem with supply in vaccines and everything, so they can have ,they can schedule themselves to get their shots” he said.
The Philippines on Thursday logged 17,220 new COVID-19 cases.
Calabarzon of which Laguna is part is one of the top regions with new infections in the recent 2 weeks.
A hospital in Calamba City, Laguna confirmed Friday a rise in suspected COVID-19 cases, most of whom are unvaccinated against illness.
Dr. Eloisa Inano, chief of hospital of Jose P. Rizal Memorial Medical Center, said the number of suspected COVID patients undergoing triage outside the hospital did not go down after the last delta surge.
“We set up isolation facilities and tents at the parking lot, that is our triage area…sa mga bata dumarami din cases ng ubo at sipon…uso ang flu ngayon, mild to moderate naman walang severe sa mga bata,” she said.
Most of the patients undergoing swabs are unvaccinated against COVID-19. “Of 20 swabbed, only 1 is vaccinated,” she said.
Only patient in the hospital is COVID positive…most of those undergoing swabs exhibit only mild to moderate symptoms, she said.
Seven hospital staff including 2 doctors, 2 nurses, 2 admin staff and a social worker are in isolation due to flu-like symptoms.
Inano said the hospital is also in the process of hiring more nurses. “Marami po kaming aplikante,” she said.
