Unvaxxed can’t expect help, even if they die-PDU30
By Nidz Godino
“Those who are still unvaccinated, no offense to you, but there is big chance that you’ll die if you get sick…there are fewer deaths now, thank God, but people still die… I’m sure those who die are unvaccinated,” President Rodrigo Duterte issued stern warning against those who still refuse COVID-19 vaccination, as country faced another surge in new cases.
“If you are vaccinated, there’s a defense, however small, for the original COVID-19 strain…the vaccine is as good for all of the variants…the variants are on the loose…the world is in quandary. Everyone’s affected, including us,”President Duterte said.
President Duterte said he will not help those who refuse to be immunized.
” Those who refuse to get vaccinated, if you get sick the risk of dying is there…so it’s up to you…if you ask me for help, I won’t help you because you didn’t get vaccinated. If you got vaccinated, we shouldn’t be worrying about it…if you die, then you’re on your own…hospitals are full by this time…contamination is ever growing, very fast…defenses available to you is the vaccines that you got earlier” he said.
He also reiterated his earlier order to barangay officials to bar unvaccinated people from going out and arrest them if they insist.
” Once barangay captain identifies those who refuse to get vaccinated, just instruct them to stay home…if you go out, you’ll be escorted, if you force the issue, I said, because barangay captain is a person in authority…he can place you under arrest, and detain you…you’ll be placed in those dirty and smelly cells.,” President Duterte said.
President Duterte said cases will be filed against those unvaccinated individuals who will insist on going out, but they will suffer first from poor conditions in barangay detention centers.
“You will be arrested and at least I think the fiscal can hasten proceeding by . . . there will be preliminary investigation right away and once the case is filed, you’ll go to jail…but what’s worse is that before you can work on anything, you’ll suffer from poor conditions…because not all public structures are really the best, the best shelter to be there,” he said.
President Duterte has been threatening to arrest those who refuse to get vaccinated, arguing that they spread the virus and put others at risk.
Last year, when there was a surge COVID-19 cases in the country due to delta variant, he threatened people to get vaccinated or end up in jail.
He later ordered barangay officials should monitor the vaccination status in their areas and bar unvaccinated people from going outside their houses.
President Duterte said police can escort unvaccinated people back to their homes if they are seen outside, although he did not say how those who are not immunized would be identified.
Amid another surge in coronavirus cases, this time due to the omicron variant, Metro Manila mayors agreed to limit movement of unvaccinated people.
The Philippines on Tuesday reported 5,434 fresh COVID-19 cases, the highest since October 23.
The country has been classified as high risk for COVID-19 following sharp rise in new cases.
More than 49,000,000 Filipinos have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, or 64.33 percent of the over 77 million government target.
On the first day of Alert Level 3 in Metro Manila, at least 32 PUV drivers and operators apprehended by Land Transportation Office (LTO) on minimum health standards against COVID-19.
LTO,has been operating in the cities of Caloocan, Malabon, Pasay, Maynila, at Parañaque. Violators has been issued show-cause order.
LTO warned transport sector to observe 70% passenger capacity limit. Regardless of capacity, jeepney drivers must load at least seven (7) passengers on both sides with one in front beside driver.
Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board stressed that violations is against franchise conditions and could led to revoke.
The Department of Tourism has fined and suspended a Makati hotel that allowed a guest to leave its premises to party and who later turned positive for COVID-19.
The Berjaya Hotel Makati was fined “equivalent to twice the rack rate of its most expensive room” and its permit as a multiple-use hotel was also revoked, the agency said in a statement.
A copy of the decision was served to the hotel, which has 15 working days to appeal, the DOT said.
Gwyneth Chua, who had a travel history from the US and checked in at the hotel on December 22, skipped quarantine at the designated site and was later seen at a party in the Poblacion district.
The hotel, in a reply to the DOT dated January 1, admitted that Chua left its premises 15 minutes after checking in, according to the agency.
“Neither did the hotel security personnel nor the front lobby call her attention, and neither was there any effort to report the incident to the Bureau of Quarantine, even after her return three (3) days later…she was later seen in social media posts at a bar in Poblacion,” the DOT said.
The hotel management’s statement and its public apology were “an admission of not just the facts of the incident but as well as their lapses in their responsibility as an accredited establishment of the Department of Tourism,” the department added.
The Philippine National Police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group has filed charges against Chua.
Makati Mayor Abby Binay earlier said city government would not declare Chua “persona non grata,” but urged hotel and the bar involved to pursue civil cases against her.
The Department of Health projects that COVID-19 cases in the country will peak by the end of the month January.
The health agency assumes that transmission of omicron variant has reached local communities, Health Undersecretary and spokesperson Maria Rosario Vergeire said.
” We are projecting that because of this omicron variant na ito, because we are assuming that is in our communities already, cases will continue to rise and might reach its peak by end of the month ..our projections show that the number of cases will continue to double everyday,” she said.
Vergeire urged public not to ignore COVID-19 symptoms as it is also the peak of flu season.
COVID-19 patients may self-isolate in their homes for 10 days and take an RT-PCR test after 3 days without symptoms, Vergeire said.
Unvaccinated individuals who are close contacts of positive patients must isolate for 14 days, while those vaccinated must quarantine for 7 to 10 days, she added.
“Let us remember, more transmissions mean more mutations of the virus,” Vergeire concluded.
